The United States government just passed a new act called, "The Stimulus." One goal behind the stimulus package is to encourage households across the nation to take a step toward greater energy savings. This bill includes a 30% tax credit (up to $200) on energy-efficient home improvements, including replacement windows and doors minus installation fees. (See American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, page 208.)
This tax credit can apply to any home-owners who owe income tax in 2009 and 2010. The windows and doors purchased must meet or exceed a certain level of energy performance. And the purchase date must be between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
Which Replacement Windows and Doors Qualify for the Tax Credit?
There are dozens of brands and products with varying levels of efficiency on the market. Pay special attention to the U-Factor and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). Purchase doors and windows with a U-Factor of 0.30 or less and a SHGC of 0.30 or less. For example, a rating of 0.31 won't qualify. (See American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, page 210.)
Every door and window should have a sticker with U-Factor and SHGC ratings.
